Today’s !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! post featured the P-47 Thunderbolt, and MonkeyPuzzle shared this photo and diagram of the Thunderbolt’s turbo-supercharger which I thought deserved some wider attention. It’s pretty amazing to see just how big it is. In fact, the turbo-supercharger was designed first, and the aircraft was designed around it. This helps to understand just why the Jug was such a huge aircraft.
H/T to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for finding the images

Imagine the homemade turbine engines you could make with that turbo.

I’m going to see if I can fit that in my ‘03 Odyssey.

In the back where the seats are supposed to be.

Exactly. I’m not worried about where the kids will sit. That’s no longer the point.

I think aside from the size, what is remarkable is how all encompassing it is. How little of the aircraft is actually there to accommodate the human

I’m not sure your stick figure pilot is quite the right scale. There’s plenty of room left for the pilot, and the P-47 had a generously roomy cockpit.

right, sure. I guess I meant the fact that the cockpick is jsut surrounded by this engine in all respects.

Like this?
But you could also put them into the trunk.

That’s ridiculous.

Good write-up on Wiki. The A-10 takes it’s name from the P-47.

We don’t understand. It must be a Mustang thing?

Or a too-much-money thing, perhaps?
